PENDLETON: Preventing COVID-19-related crimes

Police Chief Stuart Roberts is anticipating and trying to prevent an increase in criminal activity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. His officers are increasing and documenting building checks, especially in the late night and early morning hours.

“We’re going to see a population of folks become a little more desperate, doing things that they maybe wouldn’t normally do as a means of survival,” Roberts said. “I also believe we have an offender population that’s here all year round who take advantage of opportunities.”

He said that people who have surveillance equipment should use it to keep an eye on things from home. He also said that it’s important that the whole community come together to protect their neighbors.

“See something, say something,” he said. “Be willing and ready to report activities and/or persons that don’t belong.”
