The Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an accidental self inflicted gunshot wound yesterday at about 4:19 p.m, near John Day.
The victim, a 15 year old male was shooting with a family member. The family member ran out of ammunition and returned inside the residence to retrieve more ammunition.
A short while later, the victim, ran into the residence and told his brother to call 911 and that he had accidentally shot himself in the leg.
The investigation led by Dan Vandehey of the Sheriff’s Office into the incident showed that the 15 year old male was “twirling” a .22 caliber handgun. The hammer on the pistol contacted the hand or a portion of the victims clothing of the victim and the pistol subsequently discharged.
The male juvenile was taken to Blue Mountain Hospital in John Day and later transported to St. Charles Medical Center via air ambulance
