The driver who caused the lengthy power outage in the vicinity of the new Pendleton fire station was not injured. He is identified as Michael Ray, 38, of Milton-Freewater.
Police Chief Stuart Roberts said that Ray told police he was traveling on Southeast Court Avenue when he briefly looked away from the road. When he looked back, his pickup truck hit the pole, knocking it down at its base. Roberts said that Ray then continued to drive down the sidewalk, striking a metal power pole and a fire hydrant.
Roberts said Ray was cited for driving while suspended and careless driving, which are not jailable offenses. A check on the driver’s criminal history showed three arrests and 18 citations. That database does not include any arrests in Ray’s hometown of Milton-Freewater.
