ISLAND CITY: A grant for Shop with a Cop and K-9 program

The La Grande Police Department was issued a grant from the Island City Wal Mart Friday morning in the amount of $2,000 to help with the annual Shop with a Cop. The coordinator Jason Hays said this helps 15 kids that are selected in our local school district grades 1st through 6th that allows them to go shopping with a police officer and by gifts for their family. Hays went on to say, “This is a unique program that the kids get a one-on-one relationship with an officer and more importantly the kids will be the hero in the home where they get to buy a gift for the family which is a very unique situation. This year with the generous donation from Wal Mart and community support, we’ll be able to do more not only for the children but their family as well.” Any donations to this program can be made through the La Grande Police Department.
This year’s Shop with a Cop is in its 11th year and will be held on December 17th. Also, a grant of $5,000 was awarded to the Union County Sheriff’s Department for the K-9 program, K-9 Molly, handler Dane Jensen, and Sheriff Boyd Rasmussen accepted the award during the celebration of the re-grand opening of Wal Mart.
