On November 6, 2019 at approximately 12:25 a.m., Baker County Dispatch received a call from dispatch personnel in Adams County, located in Idaho. They had information regarding a vehicle crash on Kleinschmidt Grade and requested that Baker County Sheriff’s deputies respond.
Upon arrival, Deputy Spencer located the vehicle approximately 500 feet down a ravine. Due to the incredibly steep grade, the Baker County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team was activated at 2:00 a.m. Sheriff Ash and SAR members responded and began a technical rope rescue to reach the sole occupant. SAR members, Halfway Fire and Halfway-Oxbow Ambulance worked together utilizing a rope and winch system to carry the patient up the steep hillside.
The rescue was completed at 5:39 a.m. Life Flight was dispatched and transported the patient to a hospital out of the area. Idaho State Police is the investigating agency.
