WALLOWA CO: Fatal crash on OR82

On Wednesday, September 11, 2019, at about 10:30 a.m., Oregon State Police and emergency personnel responded to a three-vehicle crash on State Route 82 near milepost 38.
 
Preliminary investigation revealed that a Ford F150 pickup, operated by Christy ERICKSON (31)(F) of La Grande, with two child passengers, was eastbound negotiating a curve when her vehicle left her lane of travel and sideswiped an on-coming Subaru Outback, operated by Mary IMPORTICO (31)(F), and passenger Ryan IMPORTICO (32)(M) both from Portland. The collision caused the Ford to continue to the left into the oncoming lane and struck a Dodge Ram pickup pulling a trailer nearly head-on, operated by Colby RIMMER (25) (M) and passengers Daniel RIMMER (53) (M), Michael CRAMER (41) (M) and John KRAUS (38 ) (M), all from California.
 
All three occupants from the Ford were transported to the Wallowa County Hospital where one child passenger was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The second child passenger was transported by air ambulance to a Boise Hospital. ERICKSON was treated and released for her injuries and no other occupants were transported for injuries.
 
State Route 82 was closed for approximately five hours and one lane opened up for three hours while the on-scene investigation was conducted.
 
OSP was assisted by the Wallowa Fire Department, Enterprise Ambulance, Wallowa County Sheriff’s Office, Enterprise Police Department, and Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT)

 

 

UPDATE AT 7:05 P.M.: Oregon State Police will have a news release coming out tomorrow on the fatal crash, to give family members time to alert next of kin. We have been told it was a three-vehicle crash near milepost 38 in Wallowa County which led to multiple injuries and one fatality. OSP was assisted at the scene by the Wallowa County Sheriff’s Office, fire, ems crews and ODOT.

Update as of 3:00pm
ODOT is reporting that OR82 between Elgin and Wallowa is being reopened. Delays are still possible. Please use caution in the area.

Update as of 2:20 pm
ODOT: East. Ore.: OR82 (Wallowa Lake Highway) remains closed both directions between MP 29 at Yarrington Road (about 8 miles east of Elgin) and MP 42 due to a fatal crash near MP 38. The highway was closed around 11:20 a.m. The route will be opened as soon as OSP completes their investigation, the wreckage is removed and about 3 miles of backed up traffic is cleared from the area. No estimate on reopening at this time, but tow equipment is on the scene and ready to clear the road. There is no direct alternate route and travelers are advised to postpone travel if not already on the road or wait in a community, if possible.

Update from ODOT
ODOT: East. Ore.: OR82 (Wallowa Lake Highway) is closed both directions between MP 29 at Yarrington Road (about 8 miles east of Elgin) and MP 42 due to a serious crash near MP 38. The highway was closed around 11:20 a.m. and is expected to remain closed for at least another two hours to accommodate life flight rescue operations and crash investigation. There is no alternate route and travelers are advised to postpone travel if not already on the road or wait in a community, if possible.

A report of a possible 3-vehicle motor vehicle crash has occurred on Highway 82, milepost 38, 4 miles east of Minam. Emergency responders are at the scene. ODOT is closing both lanes of traffic from milepost 29 to milepost 42.
