BAKER CITY: Backpack Program to help host UnWINEd event

(Release from the Baker City Backpack Program)
The Baker City Backpack Program was chosen to be the recipient of the May 2019 UnWINEd fundraising event. UnWINEd is run by the Baker City Downtown association and each month chooses to help support a non-profit organization with the proceeds from the UnWINEd event.
The Baker City Backpack Program is a community organization that helps provide food for the weekend to students throughout Baker City who experience food insecurity. The school district helps identify students that might be in need and then each Thursday, students are able to take food home for the weekend in “backpacks.” With almost 50% of students in the school district eligible for free or reduced lunch, the food that is provided to children for the weekend is crucial to the health and stability of our children.
“Research shows that adequate nutrition helps kids show up to school ready to learn,” said Kris Borgen, member of the Baker City Backpack Program. “Providing food insecure children with additional food over the weekend is a valuable and greatly appreciated service to our community.”
The Baker City Backpack program will serve 5,171 students in Baker City this school year and already we have had over 500 hours of support from our volunteers. The average cost of a backpack per week is $5 and the backpack includes a variety of foods that are both nutritious and taste approved by students. Additionally, each week the backpacks include fresh fruit from the Baker Food Co-Op.
Baker City Downtown is a non-profit organization that follows the Main Street Approach, a comprehensive method to downtown commercial district revitalization. On the third Thursday of every month, Baker City Downtown holds the UnWINEd event to encourage visitors to shop downtown businesses and enjoy wine and beverages at shops along the way. The proceeds of the event are then distributed to non-profit organizations throughout the community.
UnWINEd runs from 5 pm-8 pm on the third Thursday of every month. The event starts at HATCH Baker (2019 Main Street) and glasses are sold until 7:30 pm.
