PENDLETON: An agenda working on pot

PENDLETON: An agenda working on pot

The Pendleton Planning Commission holds a regular meeting tonight at 7 in city council chambers. The commissioners will nominate a president and vice president, and vote on extending Commissioner Vincent Papol’s term through 2022.

When the regular agenda is taken care of, the commissioners will move to the John Brenne Conference room for a workshop on Oregon law versus the language in the city’s code regarding legalized marijuana. Among the topics to be discussed is marijuana as an agricultural product, and what state law requires cities that permit marijuana.

The commission will also hear a detailed report regarding the laws governing both medical and recreational marijuana operations from City Attorney Nancy Kerns. The issue is complex, and it’s expected that a second workshop will be scheduled at the end of this first session. The next meeting of the commission is scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 24.

A workshop is a public meeting, and people are welcome to attend. However, it does not include a time for members of the public to speak. They are welcome to speak with the commissioners after the workshop. The commission cannot adopt a new language or make any motions at workshop sessions.
