Starting next week there will be one less place in town to mail a letter or ship a package in Walla Walla.
The U.S. Post Office located inside Harvest Foods at 905 S. Second Ave. will close at noon on January 17. Signs notifying customers of the permanent closure and to contact the Walla Walla Postmaster regarding questions and concerns have been placed throughout the grocery store.
Nolan Lookwood, the owner of Harvest Foods, said he’s not sure how long the U.S. Postal Service has operated a Contract Postal Unit at that location, but knew it had been a long time. A CPU is a supplier-owned or supplier-leased site operated by the supplier, under contract with the postal service to provide postal products and services to the public at U.S. Postal Service prices.
“The contractor made the decision to terminate the contract,” Ernie Swanson of the USPS said. Swanson did not provide any further details.
Employees at the grocery store, who asked not to be identified, said they heard from several customers who were disappointed.
Lookwood said although the post office is closing, customers can still buy stamps and make their utility payments inside the grocery store.
