In the spring of 2018 students were surveyed in the 6th, 8th, and 11th grades in Union County on the availability of cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, e-cigarettes, and vape-pens. The survey has revealed that 11th-grade alcohol and tobacco use have decreased in Union County, however, use by 8th graders increased. Ease of access goes hand in hand with the use of substances. Nearly 8 percent of 6th graders say they can get a hold of cigarettes, 25 percent for 8th graders and almost half of the 11th graders say it is easy to get cigarettes. For e-cigarettes and vape pens the rate with higher at 57 percent of 11th graders saying they were easy to get. In a recent study by the U.S. Surgeon General, the use of e-cigarette products nearly tripled in Oregon from 5 percent in 2013 to 13 percent in 2017.
