ELGIN: No arrest on a alleged shooting

Names have been released from the Union County Sheriff’s Department on the alleged shooting Monday evening on Cabin Creek Road off of Palmer Junction Road outside of Elgin. Barry Rankin, 46 a ranch caretaker, heard shots on the property and went to investigate. Rankin confronted Heath Wilhelm 40 of Elgin, who was reportedly hunting snakes. An altercation ensued and a shotgun was discharged. When deputies arrived, Rankin was found to have a shotgun injury to his arm. No arrest has been made in the case. The case will go to a grand jury to sort out the ordeal. The investigation is ongoing. More details will be released as they become available.
