Congressman Greg Walden has asked President Donald Trump to pardon Dwight and Steven Hammond, two Harney County ranchers imprisoned on arson charges.
Rep. Walden brought the issue before the House floor yesterday.
A judge initially imposed a sentence on the Hammonds that was lighter than the 5-year minimum required for the statute they were tried under, back in 2012. After an appeal in 2016, the Hammonds were sent back to prison—an action that was a catalyst in sparking the takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.
It’s reported that the Hammonds disavowed the actions of the refuge takeover.
No action on the pardon has yet been announced.
